Laboratory-Scale Bio-Treatment of Real Arsenic-Rich Acid Mine Drainage

چکیده
Acid mine drainage (AMD) still represents a huge environmental problem. Technical and scientific breakthroughs are needed to decrease damages, treatment cost, waste production associated with AMD. The feasibility of combining continuously fed anaerobic sulfate-reducing bioreactor downstream iron oxidation step was tested, at laboratory scale, two types real arsenic-rich AMD waters from the site Carnoulès (France), that differed in acidity (pH 3.3 4.0), arsenic (As, 18 174 mg.L−1), metal concentrations. Iron remained solution, while up 99% As precipitated as amorphous orpiment bioreactor. Zinc (Zn) precipitation also observed, 99%; however, efficiency Zn less stable than As. presented bacterial community including Desulfosporosinus-related sulfate reducer. When effluents process were treated aerobic bioreactor, oxidized efficiently. efficient bio-precipitation coupled shown, thus opening perspective low-cost combination steps for removal arsenic, zinc, As-rich AMDs.

Passive Treatment of Acid-Mine Drainage
Introduction Acidic mine drainage (AMD; also called “acid rock drainage” or “acid drainage”) is an environmental pollutant that impairs water resources in mining regions throughout the world. Where such treatment is required legally, treatment must be efficient and continual. Treatment methods are commonly divided into either “active,” meaning reliance on the addition of alkaline chemicals to n...

Acid mine drainage (AMD) containing high concentrations of iron and sulphate, low pH and variableconcentrations of heavy metals leads to many environmental problems. The concentrations of Cu and Mnare high in the AMD of the Sarcheshmeh porphyry copper mine, Kerman province, south of Iran. In thisstudy, the bio-remediation of Cu and Mn ions from acid mine drainage was investigated using two nati...

متن کاملLong-term Performance of Passive Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Systems
State and federal reclamation programs, mining operators, and citizen-based watershed organizations have constructed hundreds of passive systems in the eastern U.S. over the past 20 years to provide reliable, low cost, low maintenance mine water treatment in remote locations. While performance has been reported for individual systems, there has not been a comprehensive evaluation of the perform...
